Disney+ Campaign

How can we keep Disney+ a streaming service that will continue to grow and flourish among all audiences and platforms?

Our research question was chosen after much deliberation and comparison of what streaming services most college students or young adults our age use. As technology advances over the years, many platforms such as Netflix and Hulu arose to deliver more flexible streaming to the public. We’re looking for new ways to access our favorite movies and shows beyond cable and DVD recording, which was made available through these and more services that are becoming available every year.

*This project was done independently with a group for an advertising class.

Method

Sample: Since our sampling had to consist of interviewees who use the Disney+ streaming service, we encountered issues in finding volunteers who would fall into our criteria. The sampling strategy used was a prompt of “Do you use Disney+?” and further “What do you like most about this service?” This was able to give us a more in-depth look at how these participants would contribute and further our research to draw a conclusion. We were non-bias in choosing our interviewees, avoiding interviewing only people close to us to ensure nothing that was said was staged or said in our favor. We posted our created flier, as well as descriptive reasoning for our study on multiple social media platforms such as the QU Class of 2022 and 2023 Facebook groups, as well as our respective social media accounts (Instagram, Snapchat, Twitter).

Measurement Materials: We didn’t use a set script for our interviews, instead of following a guideline including questions to ask on our main research question. However, we included these questions and reasoning which can be located in Appendix A of this report. It contains a total of 17 main questions, some of which requesting reasoning for the interviewees’ responses and elaborative prompts. The questions were based on the reactive trends we collected from forums and streaming service websites. Ex: “Are there any that you prefer over the others? What about them makes you like them more? Are there any changes you would make to any of them?” (when asked about what streaming services the interviewee currently uses)

Study Procedure: The recruitment process was maintained through social media and a flier we created that contained our agency and objective. From these social media posts, we were able to identify and select a few volunteers to be our interviewees, going along with what we have learned in class that focuses on using these social media platforms to “put ourselves out there.” We reached out to those we normally wouldn’t feel comfortable reaching out to first, opposed to our friends or roommates. Once we posted on each social media platform, further elaborated on in Appendix B, we waited to receive voluntary participants to contact follow-up communication determining their eligibility status. From here, we matched each volunteer with a member of our research group based on availability and continued further with our research and set up for a time to interview. We set time blocks for each interview, and participants were sent a meeting request with the date, time, contact information for the researcher who would be interviewing them, and a copy of the consent form (Appendix C) we verbally used. We began the interview with this oral consent process between the interviewer and interviewee. The form was read aloud to the interviewees individually before the interview process and questions began. The interviewees all verbally agreed to the details labeled in the consent form, allowing the interviewer of each session to continue on with the first prompted question. No interview took place without the verbal consent of the interviewee prior to the first question.

Results

Variety of content - Variety on streaming services depends on how much content and how many different types of content are on the service.

“[Disney+] a very low content compared to other services, like Hulu and Netflix are just trying to compile as much content as they can on to their service. Just like hoards of stuff for, you know, watch, which is their brand. Whereas Disney+ is really just looking to get you with like really quality Disney properties…”

Rewatchability of content - Rewatchability of content is the likeliness of a user to return to and rewatch content.

“Since I got my Disney+ account, my family and I have been watching old Disney movies once or twice a week all together.”

Incentives to subscribe - Incentives to subscribe are methods that a service can attract new subscribers or retain current subscribers.

“I think another incentive to get Disney+ would be if they released Marvel movies earlier on to that service.”
