Type Specimen Poster

In this project, I designed a poster that shows the typeface Century Gothic. The objective of the project was to create an elegant design that shows the beauty of the typeface. I was responsible for selecting the typeface and color palette. This project was done independently to refine my typographical skills and was not presented to or used by any of the type foundries that have designed or redesigned Century Gothic.

Research

With Rare Beauty becoming an up and coming beauty brand, I wanted to focus in on making the packaging of their mascara pop. The image shown is the current design of their mascara. Though it is very simple and beautiful, I wanted to see if I can redesign something that catches ones eye while shopping in a store or online.

Color Study

Here, I focused in on color schemes that will help make my poster look simple and elegant. I wanted to make sure that the colors were bright, but yet subtle so that it helped showcase the beauty of Century Gothic. I also wanted to pick colors that complimented each other nicely so that one was not overwhelming.

Sketches

When it came down to sketches, I was not really sure what I wanted to do with this poster design. To be honest, this one took me about 6 months to complete because I kept going back to it to improve the design even more. This is a sketch from my original design. I kept it very basic and to the point and did not make it unique at all.

Composition

This was my final design at the time. It was not great at all. Looking back I laugh because I am shocked on how this design led to my final design. Here I was very stuck with not having so much of a creative mind. I would ask professors, peers, friends and family on what I should do to fix it. I did not let this barrier stop me from totally cancelling this design.

Final Design

After 6 months of trying new designs out, I finally came to the end of this poster design. I decided to showcase the beauty of every letter Century Gothic has and show the geometric side by having the letters fall down. I believe that this new design is something that will catch a persons eye. This has to be one of my proudest designs because of the process I went through to get to where it is now. I believe that this was the start to my design career because it really allowed me to notice what I was doing wrong and use my creative mind to make it ten times better.
